NV5—a technical engineering consulting company in Hollywood, Florida—has acquired California-based Skyscene to add unmanned aerial mapping to its operational capabilities.

According to NV5, integrating Skyscene’s unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) business with its LiDAR (light detection and ranging) mapping technology will make NV5 one of the top LiDAR aerial mapping providers in the U.S.

“NV5 is always looking for opportunities to integrate new technologies that will add value to our clients and will differentiate us in the marketplace,” said Dickerson Wright, NV5 chairman and CEO.  “The acquisition of Skyscene is pivotal in meeting the ever-increasing demand for these services in all of our five business verticals.”

NV5 has traditionally relied on manned fixed-wing aircraft or helicopters for aerial mapping. However, the use of drones equipped with LiDAR is expected to provide the company’s customers with higher resolution mapping, faster mobilization and more cost-effective services than could be achieved using manned aircraft or traditional survey methods.

Skyscene is an aerial survey and mapping company that provides flight services using drone technology. The company operates fixed-wing and multirotor UAS equipped with advanced remote sensing equipment.

“Skyscene and NV5 have an established working relationship in providing this leading technology to clients from Maine to Hawaii,” said Matthew O’Brien, Skyscene president and CEO.

“Our acquisition by NV5 gives us the opportunity to work in a seamless manner and create leading-edge geospatial solutions utilizing UAV LiDAR technology,” he continued. “We are excited to expand our services nationwide and look forward to helping NV5 become a leading geospatial solution provider using UAV technologies.”
